Song Meanings - Twist Around

As i was driving around town after a 4:20 session with my phriend Chris, 
this song appeared in my tape player, from a 98 show, "oh yeah, twist 
around!!!".  The first thing i thought of when i finally figured out the 
lyrics, was to post my thoughts on the songs meaning on this incredible 
website (thank you ANDY!!). So on with the story.

I believe this song to be a moving recollection of a songs growth in the 
studio, which proves that the band is not perfect like many of us think, 
and may even have some insight into some of the creative difficulties the 
band has at their rehearsals.  Although I was not an English major, here is 
my analysis on these lyrics.

The setting:
         Rehearsal studio, where Trey, Mike, Page, and Fish begin to refine a jam 
that ultimately will become a new song.  As they practice the slow, jazzy 
feel to the song, one member leaves.  For all intents and purposes, I will 
call this band member Trey, just because.  Trey exits, not to be seen for 
days.  The rest of the band is left to finish the song and lyrics.

The verse begins: Spoke your name, for many days
                   Pronouncing it in several ways
                   And moving letters all around
                   And substituting every sound
                
                    After trey leaves, the rest of the band curses his name.  They can't 
believe they have                   to somehow, make this jam into a song.  They try to 
practice it, but they have  to              change it all around, even 
"substituting" trey's guitar with some other "sound".
        
                  When you heard, the end result
                   I told you it was not my fault
                   If you were here most of the day
                   It wouldn't twist around that way

                    When trey finally comes back, the band plays him back the recording 
of what they                came up with.  Trey is pissed that what started out as a 
nice slow-groove jazz                       number, has become an all out rocker.  He 
blames everyone, although it is his own                     fault, if he had not left, 
the song may have come out the way he wanted, only "It                      wouldn't 
twist around that way"

        I am not sure who is credited as the music writer, and lyricist for Twist 
Around, but my guess would be Trey/Phish.  Well, This was fun...I think 
everyone should try this...come on give it a shot!!
