Swept Away
Another half-baked insight from kipmat. This one came to me after
reading a discussion about the meaning behind the title "Billy Breathes".
I recalled another conversation I had about
what the lyrics to "I am Hydrogen" would be (if there were any);
probably descriptive things like "I am plentiful, I have one electron, I
bond with halogens", that sort of thing. I have always heard "side two"
of Billy Breathes as a suite of songs, beginning with Bliss and ending
with Prince Caspian. I believe this to be a suite describing the life of
an OXYGEN atom.
Bliss is a picture of the air; the invisibility of molecules so tiny they
defy gravity, just floating around, coming and going. The Lyrics to
Billy Breathes are enigmatic and probably about the author himself, but I
can hear the closing solo as the act of breathing, specifically inhaling
the surrounding air. As Swepty Away begins, we find an Oxygen atom
nestled in the recesses of the cavernous lungs observing it's situation,
and then it is picked up by the blood stream and sent to it's
destination. (My memory of Biology Class fails me here.) During Steep,
Oxygen bonds with carbon and heads back to the heart; a steep journey
from your toes. I can hear the cells doing their daily activities, the
crackle of nerve synapses, and the pumping of the valves of the heart,
before returnign to the lungs and exhalation of the the closing number.
Again, the lyrics to prince Caspian aren't really related, but it is the
placement and mood of the tune that feels like breathing out. I always
hear the fade out and feel like I just let go of a balloon and am
watching it fly away, getting smaller and amaller against the enormity of
the sky, then losing sight and remembering that I'm still on earth.
I think everybody wishes they could just fly away at the point when
circumstances become to much, but in reality we'd all be happier right
where we are, being who we are. Next time: "The Suzie Greenberg-Madonna
Connection"
