Silent in the Morning

The meaning behind this song came to me on a Friday evening(Shabbat to all our
Jewish friends). I believe this song to be abouta Jesish boy on the Jewish
day of Attonment, Yom Kippur. The song is about a jewish kid walking to
temple on Yom Kippur in a non-jewish community. " My glance is always darting
as I stroll the avenue avoiding all the obstacles that terrorize my view".
Yom Kippur means that everyone gets a day off from school. So as the young
kid is walking to temple he sees all the other people in the community staring
at him b/c he is walking to temple in a suit while everyone else has the day
off. He tries not to make eye contact w/ the non-jews b/c he feels like an
outsider-avoiding the eye contact that terrorizes his view.
The next lyric"If you are here with me I trust you to lead the way....."
This reflects on the young boys relationship w/ God. Despite to all the
people in the community he is an outcast as a Jew, he feels spiritually that
God will show him the way.
The next verse, "Silent in the morning, suspended in the trees, lunch
time comes you've found your voice that brings me to my knees" This reflects
on the whole Yom Kippur experience. Yom Kippur, is a day of silence hence
Silent in the Morning, you sit in temple all day thinking about the lunch you
will not be having today. Now, the "brings me to my knees" part is about the
Kaddosh-which for all the non-jews out there is a prayer that is sung at
during all services at temple. At a point in the Kaddosh, you are supposed
bow and bend your knees when a certain part is sung." Found your voice that
brings to my knees"refers to the cantor or rabbis voice during the Kaddosh
that brings the young boy to his knees.
The next verse, "till once again I bask in morning stillness" refers
that to after the kaddosh you are back to feeling silent and still b/c its Yom
kippur and you have been in temple all day.
"The target that I shoot for seems to move with every breath
I tighten all my arteries and make one last request
Divine creation hears me, and he squashes me with fear
I think that this exact thing happened to me, just last year"
The primary purpose of Yom Kippur is to attone for your sins. The boy
tightens all his arteries(becomes tense while he prays) and makes one last
request-forgiveness which is the purpose of Yom Kippur. The purpose is for
God to hear you ask for forgiveness, so that you will be wriiten in the book
of life, but In reality you are asking for forgiveness b/c you fear the power
of God as to ultimately whether you will go to heaven or hell. "I think that
this exact thing happened to me just last year", well this is the truth b/c
Yom kippur is a once a year event that does happen every year.
On a side not I am not extremely religious or into heavily into Judaism and
even though Tom Marshall is not a jew.
