The Curtain
The Curtain
Although it doesn't have the crazy lyrics of Reba or Stash, this is my
favorite Phish song lyrically becuase it gets right to the point. The
Curtain is of course, the end, death. The song is written from the point
of view of a man about to die. Before the curtain, "as he saw his life run
away from him", he sees everyone else in the world doing what he did his
entire life. They are rushing along, not stopping to appreciate what they
have while it is there. Their voices saying the words of everyday human
activity become a huge song. He then imagines a baby being born and
starting life. In broken english, the baby says "Please me have no
regrets." The baby wants what everyone wants when they begin life, to live
in the present and enjoy what they have, instead of always trying to aquire
more wealth. Unless we appreciate and take advantage of what we have, we
will regret our life and always wonder what might have been. This is what
the old man thinks. But it was too late for him, as "he followed the lines
going south".
