Brian and Robert

Brian is Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys even have a song about laying alone, "In My Room." Wilson spent a few years i bed and suffered from various substance abuse problems and depression. Robert could be Plant, as perhaps Trey or Tom used to lay and listen to Led Zep.
Pat Britton riehl-brit@greennet.net I disagree with Bob about the meaning of Brian and Robert. The lyrics are aimed not towards those who are social outcasts. Rather, they are aimed towards those who are bitter, selfish dudes who don't have any fun. "If children playing all around / to you is noise not pleasant sound." This guy obviously is a couch potato goof who's "Longing for his TV seat." The song is a sarcastic satire on this poor soul who's stuck in a lonely world of no fun and no friends.
i believe the song brian and robert to be quite a clear message to a certain group of people. "if you're just staring at your wall, this one is for you" to me means to all the people out there who feel socially outcasted or alienated in any way, this is phish's re-assurance that this period of loneliness will pass and to seek solice in the music. i'm just guessing here but it seems to make sense, especially considering the lyrics about walking through the street, there' no one you wish to meet ect. this is one of the best songs of 98. take it easy friends, bob peterson=0)
